The guys have recently been in the studio with Ambiel’s main go to man, NJC. The collective have a number of singles in production and news about the releases will be coming soon.
Below is the single that was released on Ambiel at the end of 2014. Video shot at Southampton docks, England.
Sleepercell Music’s Tom Keeling recently caught up with Kevin Thorpe in between studio sessions to ask him a few questions about the debut album and the bands live show….
Pulsating / Motivating / Jammy
It’s difficult to answer that as a collective as we all have our own tastes and inspirations. For me personally, I gain a lot of inspiration from trance and psychedelic melodies as well as chord progressions is music from Coldplay and M83. Couple that with my love of hard smelling rave beats and you can kind of hear why tracks like ’The Point Of No Return’ and ‘Amazing’ have turned out the way they have done.
Yes for sure – getting quality rehearsal time with all of us together is tricky as we all have our own jobs and life responsibilities to hold down. However, saying that, the desire to succeed from all of us is high and we are all willing to make sacrifices in our own way to make the bigger puzzle come together.
Yep there’s some big shows on the horizon:
August 2nd – Subtone – Cheltenham
August 27th ‘ Freebass – Our very own free entry party @ Rhythm Factory London
September 6th – Canbeat – Sittingbourne (Fund raising event for cancer research – family day out with beer tent ect…)
September 14th – United Festival London
The best thing and performing live is the interaction and energy between us all. It’s not like my previous DJ sets and having the awesome Will Spurling on drums is a big addition as he is the glue for us all.
Yes it’s been tricky trying to replicate our studio sound on a live stage and over time, we have found the right balance of pre-mixed and live sounds to make that possible.
On one laptop we use Ableton live to trigger pre-recorded synth and backing parts, these come out in stems so that the front of house mix engineer can ensure the levels are correct. This laptop also sends out a master click track to the drummer and everybody else on stage. On the second laptop we use Main Stage which is like a live version of Logic. This enables Nick and I to play the channel instruments from our tracks live on the keyboard.
The keyboard that I use is an 88 key model so I can have upto 3 sounds spread across the octaves at any one time allowing me to play different parts quickly without changing patches. I also use the trigger pads and faders on this keyboard to manage filters and sample triggers.
From the same laptop and also within Main Stage are the sample instruments for our drummer Will. His kit has sample trigger sends on so when he hits a snare, the actual snare sound from our track is triggered – the same for the kick drum. What’s mad is that we can also mix in the actual mic’d acoustic drum sound with the sample for extra edge.
It’s an amazing drum set up that we have and a lot relies on our sound guy NJC to get the balance right at front of house because on stage, all you can hear is the acoustic kit when you’re stood next to it.
Like all new acts, we are striving to get bigger gigs and reach more fans. In two years time we’d like to be an act that’s considered for all major dance events and having our tracks on primetime radio 🙂
I think for the dance scene, it’s about being one step ahead with trends so that you can be at the forefront of any new movements. That and having the ability to write a stand out track that will be loved by many.
It’s about being one step ahead with trends so that you can be at the forefront of any new movements
It’s tough out there so you have to work hard at keeping all of your social networks up to date. You have got to have the belief in your music and ability as if you don’t, nobody else will do. You also have to be prepared to start small, put in the time doing smaller gigs to start a buzz and work it from there.
