Deep N Beeper / The Remixes Interview
After releasing his latest Gargantuan project through Ambiel, we thought we’d catch up with Deep for a lil Natter about it all….
Deep mate, Hi, first off, give us a little introduction as to who you are and how you first came into the world of production and sound manipulation?
Yes I am a music producer of 16 years long, and I first came into it through fascination with cutting edge noises that you heard in the dance music of the time. I loved music so much my whole life and I guess I’ve always wanted to attempt to emulate what most fascinates me in my surroundings and change it and put my own little twist into the mix.
Well thinking about the last question at that time 16 years ago it was Aphex and Squarepusher and others from the Warpy family that were the cutting edge, just going out there and experimenting with how far they could go. Also at the time more laid back and subtle I would say Massive Attack, Portishead & BOC, and Radiohead were and still are my favourite band, although I have to admit some of their tunes are too moody for me now! Nowadays I listen to these guys still, although with a more fussy selection from their work. I also currently listen to a lot of minimal/underground DNB and jungle, the dubby or more minimal end of dubstep, alot of hip-Hop, grime and frankly a quite diverse bunch of artists over a very diverse amount of genres. Too much variety to name everyone.
I have always loved mixing it up and sharing stuff with others. This group of producers range from old friends to new ones I’ve met more recently at raves, but they are all mates and great producers and I just wanted to bring some variety to my sound, see what they could do with it and ultimately create a bit of a melting pot to forge new ideas and sounds.
Two of my favourites have to be Camelphat and the convolution reverb in Max for Live. I have used and combined these in many configurations to get a very diverse swathe of sounds out of the computer.
Not going to lie, my formula is simple. Bung all the stems into Live and see what sounds I like, dump the rest and get creative. I guess a mantra could be: “don’t be scared to delete almost everything”, something I sometimes do to any track when I’m annoyed with it!
My fave 3 of mine have to be: No Rules, The Beast (Deep Dive Remix) and I Detuner. I really love the sound of these 3 and I believe they are the closest I have got to really doing something different from whats out there but still keeping it accessible. Also they are not ageing to my own ears which is a good sign. Hmmm, which remixes stray furthest from the original? Probably Pao’s & Beeba’s. They have really gone into an area where I was like WTF is this genre?! There great still, just furthest from what I did originally.
2 things from the begin of next year, that I’ve been working on with Paranoid Angel my now ex-partner but still music production partner (thankfully, I think she is an awesome producer and writer and piano player). Lab Rejects (an album) which we created from writing strange out there tracks inspired by the first one I named Lab Reject K-22. I guess the name speaks for itself. We wrote about 5 fresh tracks and also dug through my archive of old stuff and selected what we felt were some lost gems. Also in the pipeline is The Ping Vs Non-Ping EP. This is going to be our attempt or take on trip-hop, a genre for which I have always had loads of love. We’ve even written lyrics and taken to the mic as Onepacman and Paranaut. TBH I never thought I’d do this and although I won’t be battling any top MC anytime soon (LOL!) I do think the results are respectable. Also on this EP is our good friend and legend Zookeeper on the mic for a track too. I’m excited about these two. Looking forward to the new year.
Deep N Beeper has dropped a formidable array of genre busting releases through Ambiel Music over the last few years. Over this period, various underground producers and fellow artists have felt compelled to take Deeps concepts off into varying territories and formulate sounds of their own devising using his unique building blocks.
Here we get to know a few of the producers involved in this epic reimagining of a sprawling back catalogue.
NIGHTMARE & ONI
Hi, first off, give us a little introduction as to who you are and how you first came into the world of production and sound manipulation and how did you first discover Deep N Beeper?
We are Nightmare & Oni from Croydon, we love BASS!
We’ve been producing and DJing for over 15 years and became a duo through a love of producing music using the game ‘Music,’ (on original Playstation) , Fruity Loops and mixing grime and drum & bass on vinyl on belt drive turntables!
We played at a Renegade Hardware night in Brixton a few years back which is where we first met Deep N Beeper, we’ve been friends ever since!
Deep N’ Beeper approached us with this track (“The Beast,”) as he knew our love for the dark side of Drum & Bass. At the time no one else had been asked to remix it and we knew our style would work, to bring the vibe down to 140bpm (Dubstep). We like a challenge!
We aim to always take a unique approach to any track when remixing, especially as we have remixed many genres and styles over the years.
We feel a ‘Remix,’ should be exactly as it says… a RE-MIX! It must have some elements of the original but ultimately it will be our own interpretation.
A few collabs (of various genres) with Deep N’ Beeper are DEF on the cards!! We have EP’s coming out soon on ‘Dark Adversary Audio,’ ‘Southside Dubstars,’ and ‘Monsters Music.’
We have just launched the ‘Monsters Music,’ label with the first release from our team ‘Monsters.’ It’s an 11 track compilation with various styles of Dubstep, Drum & Bass and experimental tunes from the whole team. I’ve been in and around the electronic scene since the mid 90s, working with artists and collectives in Bristol and London. I was the nerdy one in the group of musicians so I got stuck into learning production on Cubase and a bunch of outboard gear back in the day. While house music is my first love, I’ve known Deep N Beeper for about 10 years and I’ve always admired his dedication to those meticulously crafted beats and sonic textures. We like to argue the merits of melody versus the rest. My stuff always tends to fill in the blanks where as Deep’s stuff leaves things nice and spacious and invites the listener to fill in the rest.
Time Game really jumped out at me with the presence Deep created with those dubby samples – I could feel my old school sounding melodic remix forming while I listened to it and it just kind of flowed from there.
I’ve done several mixes, mainly bootlegs. I would say you have to treat each track as a piece of art in itself and see what you can hear coming through to you personally when you listen to it. I’ll loop a section or two to get a vibe and see what it feels like I might make of it based on my favorite sections. The main formula is definitely to maintain a signature sound and keep to a track arrangement you work with well.
This is a tough question. Hardware, probably. My main controller is an Akai MPK which has excellent dials for twisting the sound straight from the keyboard. However I’ve recently discovered how essential a decent subwoofer is – I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I’m currently unsigned and I’m interested in working on more remixes for Deep and other artists.

Hey my names Sweetpea, I live in London. I’ve been a drum and bass DJ for nearly 10 years now, I started dipping into the production side for about the last 4 years. I’m still learning the in’s and out’s of production, but jumped at the chance to remix one of his tracks. I met Deep N Beeper through mutual friends and out at drum and bass nights.
Deep sent me a few tracks and i really liked the abstract sound elements he used in Silverback Guerilla. I did consider making the remix to my usual minimal sound but I had recently been to a Rupture night before i started working on this track, hence the jungle vibe, and once i heard the full vocal, i knew i wanted to do something different.
I had previously remixed a track for Taelimb a few years earlier, which was a more darker vibe. I think you have to treat every musical project with a fresh ear. I personally like to listen to the audio files individually and pick out the sounds i like most and work from that. I wanted to try something a bit different this time, and make a track that wouldn’t fit my usual type of drum and bass.
I work on Logic 9. I usually use CamelPhat in most of my tracks, i use it quite a lot to add to the bass element, and i find it quite easy to play around with and see what sounds you can come up with.
Earlier this year i had a collab release with PRTCL on Terabyte Records. I’m hoping to get some tracks finished soon, and release my first solo EP. I work closely with vocalist J:S and will be writing some tracks with her soon.

Hi, my name is Pao Duran, I am a spanish producer who recently moved to Madrid back from London. I have been doing sound design for the past ten years, but it wasnt until around 2010 I started producing and writing music. I met Deep N Beeper while being classmates in uni and started talking about music and sound production
I moved to London to study 3D and Visual FX. I met Deep N Beeper as we were classsmates. As we were both interested in music and sound production, we just gelled together
In the past couple years I have remixed a bunch of spanish artists by demand, as well as experimented with songs by more stablished bands, although this have not been released.
I guess my computer, as a whole, is the centerpiece of my studio. But my favorite piece of equipment, and the unit I love the most is defeinitly my eurorack modular system. It is build with modules mainly from MakeNoise and Mutable Instruments, as well as a number of DIY modules.
At the moment, as I have just moved back to Spain, I am trying to start a new project, but everything is going slower than I’d like to.
Anderson has been both extremely quiet and busy of late, working deep within her creative tunnels under the city of London, she has recently resurfaced with some amazing new sights and sounds….
